Every digital meter has a user port, called P1. Once it is switched on, it sends your electricity use every second, and the data of a digital gas meter (and, with some water companies, the water meter) about every five minutes. You can plug in a small reader that feeds an app, a smart thermostat or an energy management system, so you see what your home uses right now.
The port is closed by default. You open it in Mijn Fluvius, under port management, with a recent energy bill and your ID card or itsme at hand; it can take up to 72 hours. A small triangle above "P1" on the meter's display shows that the port is active. Fluvius mentions no fee for opening it, but charges a call-out fee if a technician finds the problem lies with your app rather than the meter.
You stay the owner of your data. You decide whether the port is open and which device or app may read it, and anything plugged into an open port can read all of it. Choose devices with care, and close the port again if you stop using it.
