Check for asbestos before you start breaking things
In a building from before 2001, get an asbestos attest, and for renovation an extra investigation of the work zone, before any demolition; asbestos you uncover must be removed, not covered up again.

In Flanders, buildings from before 2001 need an asbestos attest when they are sold, and by 2032 every owner of such a building must have one. An asbestos expert inspects the building, and OVAM issues the attest.
Before you renovate, the attest is the starting point. For the works themselves, OVAM recommends an extra investigation in the work zone by an experienced, certified asbestos expert, who may need to open up walls or floors to find hidden asbestos. A contractor renovating for a private owner must have such a destructive inventory made anyway.
If the works make enclosed asbestos easy to reach, it has to be removed; covering it up again is not allowed. Rules and deadlines change, so check the OVAM pages before you plan.
