Before you compare, take a recent bill and look up three things about your current contract: whether the price is fixed or variable, the name of the product, and the date the contract started. Then open CompaCWaPE, the comparator run by the Walloon energy regulator CWaPE. You say whether you are a household or a business, give your postcode and meter type, and enter your yearly use, or pick the profile closest to your household if you don't know it.

The result is a list of fixed-price and variable-price offers with an estimated yearly bill that includes energy, transport and distribution costs, taxes and VAT. You can filter it, and new-customer discounts are shown only if you ask for them. Keep in mind that suppliers compete only on the energy part of the bill; grid costs and taxes are the same whoever supplies you.

CWaPE suggests asking yourself a few questions before you choose: would you pay a little more for a fixed price, can you live with a price that moves with the market, and do the supplier's conditions suit you, such as compulsory e-billing or payment in advance. The tool itself warns that its estimates for variable and dynamic contracts do not yet reflect the latest rise in wholesale prices, and that some suppliers are changing the terms of fixed-price contracts, so read the supplier's price sheet and specific conditions before you switch. CompaCWaPE is available in French and German.
