On a day/night meter? Use the new off-peak hours, including 11:00 to 17:00

Since 1 January 2026 the Walloon bi-hourly tariff has off-peak hours from 22:00 to 07:00 and from 11:00 to 17:00, every day of the week. Weekends are no longer fully off-peak, so move flexible use into those windows.

If your electricity contract has a day and a night rate (bi-hourly, or bihoraire), the hours changed on 1 January 2026. Off-peak hours now run from 22:00 to 07:00 and also from 11:00 to 17:00. Peak hours are 07:00 to 11:00 and 17:00 to 22:00. The same schedule applies on every day of the week, so Saturday and Sunday are no longer off-peak all day long.

CWaPE, the Walloon energy regulator, describes the midday window as a time when the grid has plenty of electricity. Its campaign suggests doing the laundry between 11:00 and 17:00 and starting the dishwasher after 22:00. It gives electric cars and electric water heaters as examples of large loads that can be shifted, so if you have one, set it to run in the off-peak windows rather than in the evening peak.

You don't need to do anything to your meter. Old meters with a dial were switched to the new hours at the end of 2025, and smart meters are adjusted remotely. If you had the communication of your smart meter switched off, your grid operator contacts you to change it.
