A heat-pump boiler is a small heat pump on top of a hot-water tank. About 70% of the energy it needs comes from the surrounding air, which makes it three to four times more efficient than an ordinary electric boiler. A built-in electric element helps out when you need a lot of hot water or water above 55 °C, which lowers the efficiency.
It takes some space and makes some noise, so it usually goes in a garage or basement. It can use indoor air, outdoor air or the air extracted by a ventilation system; extracted air works best. A medium-sized model is usually enough for a family of four.
With solar panels, set it to heat the tank around midday, for example between 11:00 and 15:00. The tank keeps the water hot for many hours.
