Wallonia is phasing out heating with oil and coal boilers. In new buildings, installing an oil or coal boiler has been banned since 1 January 2026. In existing buildings, installing or replacing one will be banned from 1 January 2031. That date was first set for 2026; according to the SPW, the Walloon Parliament has now adopted the later date to give owners time to prepare.
If you already heat with oil, the burner of your boiler may still be replaced until 31 December 2034. Exceptions are possible where the alternatives are not feasible for technical, economic or practical reasons; the SPW news item does not yet say how to apply for one.
The alternatives the SPW names are a heat pump, a biomass boiler, a hybrid system, a heat network, and natural gas where the gas network reaches. The page announces no ban on gas boilers.
