Brussels has set a minimum energy performance for all homes. By 1 January 2033 at the latest, every home must reach the "PEB 275" target: a calculated use of at most 275 kWh of primary energy per m² a year. Bruxelles Environnement says this is about class E today, so homes now rated F or G will need insulation or technical works. A stricter "PEB 150" target is planned for no earlier than 31 December 2045; the government still has to set that date. Derogations are possible in some cases, and failing to comply can lead to a fine or a penal sanction.

Today a PEB certificate is only required when a home is sold or rented. It will become compulsory for every home, including homes the owner lives in. The official timetable for that is not fixed: Bruxelles Environnement says "by the end of 2030 at the earliest", counted as five years after the new implementing rules take effect, and the date those rules take effect has not been set yet. As long as that date is open, check the official page before relying on any date.

If your home is likely to be F or G, the certificate's renovation scenario is a good place to start planning.
