A heat pump works efficiently only when the home loses little heat and the radiators or floor heating can run at a low temperature. The free Warmtepompklaar tool from the Flemish government gives a first indication for your home. For a full assessment, ask a certified installer, an architect or an engineering office.
The study behind the tool sorts homes into three groups. Well-insulated homes suit a full heat pump. Moderately insulated homes suit a hybrid heat pump that works alongside a boiler. Poorly insulated homes should first insulate the roof and replace old glazing, because a heat pump would cover only a small part of their heating.
Older homes with radiators can still qualify: radiators are often oversized, and replacing some of them costs less than improving the walls and roof. The advice assumes today's price of electricity compared to gas, so it can shift when prices change.
