Solar panels from 2024: no compensation, so use what you produce
Walloon solar panels in service since 1 January 2024 get no compensation and pay no prosumer tariff. Grid costs apply only to what you draw, a smart meter is required, and you can sell what you inject to a supplier.

Solar panels put into service in Wallonia from 1 January 2024 no longer get compensation: what you send into the grid is not deducted from what you take from it. In return you pay no prosumer tariff, and grid costs are charged only on the electricity you actually draw, not on what you inject.
A smart meter (compteur communicant) is mandatory for these installations. ORES replaces the meter free of charge, and it has to be in place before the panels are used. Before you can use the power, an approved body checks the installation and issues a conformity report, and the installation must be declared to ORES.
The power you inject is not lost if you arrange it: you can sell it to a supplier of your choice under a contract, which can be a different supplier from the one you buy from, or share it through energy sharing. If you do neither, your injected power earns you nothing.
ORES advises using electricity while your panels produce, because that lowers what you draw from the grid and so what you pay. Size the installation to what you can use yourself during the day rather than filling the whole roof, and plan big daytime users such as the washing machine or a water heater around the sun.
